Session 335

Material Expectations; Lack of Funds; Austerity vs. Material Comfort

April 17, 1967

SESSION 335 APRIL 17, 1967 9 PM MONDAY (By 9 PM it was dark. There was a rather unusual rain and lightning storm of a mild nature, which kept up through the session. The lightning flashed silently followed several seconds later by distant rolling thunder, Seemingly coming from beyond the surrounding mountains.

(We were having trouble with our car, and at suppertime I had been voicing fears that it might be finished.)

Good evening.

(“Good evening, Seth.”)

Now. You must watch your expectations, Joseph.

I am speaking in highly practical terms. Your expectations literally create your life as you know it. Your attitude toward transportation needs adjustment. As long as you believe firmly that you cannot afford the kind of automobile that you want, this will be literally true.

Your expectations alone will change your material circumstances. The belief that you can afford the kind of car you require will in itself form the circumstances that will make such an automobile literally possible.

Your belief otherwise automatically shuts you off so that the necessary climate, the psychic climate, is a barrier to what you want. The belief will cause attractions, in which physical circumstances will change. It is highly impractical to believe as you do, regarding your automobile or prospects, for another.

There are many distortions in the universal mind book that Ruburt reads, and yet overall the ideas presented are highly advantageous. I cannot put this emphatically enough: your beliefs form a psychic climate that in itself attracts and forms the materialization of those beliefs.

They are made material through quite automatic processes. Change your beliefs and you change your material circumstances. Your beliefs now concerning finances and the automobile are actually keeping you from bettering your financial situation. This is directly caused by the fact that you suspect such ideas as these, beneficial on theoretical grounds, but quite impractical in your actuality.

On the contrary, an understanding of the rule of expectation is the one truly practical step you can take whenever any change in physical circumstances is desired. You must replace the negative images you have with positive ones. The negative ones are being faithfully reproduced in physical terms, and this is hardly to your advantage.

There is a resistance here on your part, a resistance to the kind of material that I am giving you this evening. A rather stubborn resistance that has its roots in your childhood in this life. The resistance is allowing you to cheat yourself in more areas than one. While you are somewhat better about this, there has been no profound change in your attitudes in this one particular area.

In other respects of course there have been profound changes. By your attitude you are effectively forming a barrier against any financial betterment of any significant kind. You repulse the circumstances in which such betterment could take place automatically, because of the effect of your expectations.

It goes without saying that a full-time job would better the financial situation, but this is not the sort of thing to which I am referring. Your situation could be bettered financially while you retain basically the same schedule you now enjoy, if—and a very large if—if changed expectations were creating the psychic climate in which supply would flow. Doors would open that you do not know existed.

You may take now break and I shall continue.

(9:25. Jane’s pace was average, her eyes open at times, her voice better than usual, yet not loud. Lightning still flashed.

(9:31.)

You are caught between two attitudes that battle each other. A desire for austerity and a desire for physical materials.

The two of you, working together, could change your material circumstances in truly astounding ways. I wanted to speak to you about this, since the matter came up this evening.

Our own physical climate is a poor one for a session, however. The electrical currents are not working to our advantage; this being a peculiar circumstance, incidentally, having to do with a changed ionization of the surface of the ground, that sometimes occurs about this season. This in connection with the high electrical content of the near atmosphere.

Instead of a steady flow of electromagnetic current, generally speaking, there is a rather erratic bombardment that affects such psychic affairs as ours. Under different conditions, an electric storm can be beneficial to our purposes. It is the altered ground ionization, somewhat peculiar to this season, that causes the difficulty.

If it is somewhat bothersome to me, it is of great benefit to growing things however, and quickens the chemical responses of plant life. This, in combination with the rain, you see.

I am going to end the session directly for this reason. We will hold our normal session Wednesday. If you feel cheated, my friends, then you may if you wish hold a brief session tomorrow. This is up to you.

The particular circumstances involved are interesting however, and I will explain them more clearly at our next session. They also have an effect upon projections and dreams, incidentally, and they affect the habits of birds.

My best wishes to you both. I would continue the session, but though Ruburt feels no difficulty at his end, I am involved at my end. Again, a fond good evening.

(“Good night, Seth.” (9:43. Jane said she felt no trouble. In fact, she thought Seth was coming through very well, particularly when he started explaining why he was having trouble. She noticed no unusual pauses within, in the flow of the material, etc.

(After the session, Jane said she felt that Seth was still around, which was unusual. She felt that Seth was “localized” right beside her as she sat on the divan; that is, that he was standing just beside and in front of her. But neither of us saw anything unusual.

(As far as we recall offhand, this is the first time Seth has held a short session for the above mentioned reasons.)
